چکیده

Despite general information that skeletal muscle mass is the largest organ in the body and despite increased awareness of the importance of skeletal muscle in biological function, methods and techniques for its routine assessment in humans are generally lacking. One important reason for the paucity of assessment tools is the relative lack of direct data on anatomical skeletal muscle mass in humans. J. Nutr. 127: 994S–997S, 1997.

Sarcopenia and planning to management: review article

Life expectancy has increased throughout the world and, as a result, the population of the elderly is also rising. From the age of 30 years old, the human body mass loses about 0.1 to 0.5% of its skeletal muscle mass annually, which is accelerated after the age of 65 years old. Aging is characterized by a decrease in the progression of musculoskeletal and physical activity known as sarcopenia. ...

Conference on ‘Nutrition and age-related muscle loss, sarcopenia and cachexia’ Symposium 2: Mechanisms for loss of muscle mass, strength and clinical measurement of malnutrition and cachexia The wasting continuum in heart failure: from sarcopenia to cachexia

Sarcopenia (muscle wasting) and cachexia share some pathophysiological aspects. Sarcopenia affects approximately 20 %, cachexia <10 % of ambulatory patients with heart failure (HF). Whilst sarcopenia means loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that predominantly affects postural rather than non-postural muscles, cachexia means loss of muscle and fat tissue that leads to weight loss. The was...

Sarcopenia: European consensus on definition and diagnosis

The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) developed a practical clinical definition and consensus diagnostic criteria for age-related sarcopenia. EWGSOP included representatives from four participant organisations, i.e. the European Geriatric Medicine Society, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, the International Association of Gerontology and Ger...

Optimal management of sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is the progressive generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function which occurs as a consequence of aging. With a growing older population, there has been great interest in developing approaches to counteract the effects of sarcopenia, and thereby reduce the age-related decline and disability. This paper reviews (1) the mechanisms of sarcopenia, (2) the diagnosis of ...

One size may not fit all: anti-aging therapies and sarcopenia

Sarcopenia refers to age-related loss of muscle mass and function. Several age-related changes occur in skeletal muscle including a decrease in myofiber size and number and a diminished ability of satellite cells to activate and proliferate upon injury leading to impaired muscle remodeling. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying sarcopenia are unknown, it is tempting to hypothesize that i...
